Kamden & The Friendly Skies

I don't blog about our "blended family" issues too often, mostly because we don't have very many....life is pretty copacetic on the whole. Yesterday's experience was very interesting, however. Since the beginning of the school year we have been driving Kamden to meet his mom every other weekend. We usually meet somewhere off of I-40 like Needles or Lake Havasu. Since Kam is getting a little older (and we are sick and tired of driving) we decided to fly him into Phoenix. So after school, we trotted down to Ontario Airport. He has flown several times before but was REALLY nervous about doing it by himself. He asked me questions all the way there, like "Will someone stay with me on the plane? What if a stranger talks to me? How big will the plane be?" etc. So we get there, check in, go through security and he is clenching my hand the entire time. We get to our terminal and there is a little blond boy about Kamden's age wearing the Southwest, unaccompanied minor badge around his neck. He introduces himself and tells us that he is flying to Phoenix to visit his mom. The two hit it off perfectly, Kamden's fears are quelled, he gives me a kiss, gets on the plane, life is great. The terminal clears out with exception of 4 other parents of unaccompanied minors (parents are asked to wait until the plane leaves just in case there are any delays). All four parents are flying there kids to see the "other parent" for the weekend. We all start to talk, and compare custody arrangements, etc. To hear some of their horror stories makes me appreciative of the mellow, low drama arrangement/relationship we have with Kam's Mom! I exchanged numbers with father of Kamden's new little friend since it appears they will be spending some quality flight time toghether.
